The best solution is to try to scrape and repaint the existing trim, which is likely to be of old growth local wood and somewhat rot resistant if properly sealed. If the trim is too far gone, new trim could be considered but it must be well primed especially the end grain. The quality and grain of modern pine trim makes it susceptible to rapid decay so alternative materials like mahogany and cedar should be considered. And, in some cases, synthetics like PVC or composites can be a suitable alternative for intricate shapes in difficult to reach areas. Regardless, if new wood trim is suggested, the importance of priming the end grain cannot be overemphasized.
